Summer Scholar Opportunities

EM x SDOH Lab

Dr. Kelly Doran, Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine

Research on Homelessness, Housing, and Health

Deadline to apply: March 1, 2025

Position Summary

Students working in the EM x SDOH Lab have the opportunity to contribute to one of two studies funded by the National Institutes of Health that examine the intersection of health and housing, with a focus on substance use and overdose prevention. The studies are titled "Implementation of Overdose Prevention Practices in Permanent Supportive Housing" and "Crisis Response, Durable Lessons: A Mixed Methods Examination of a Large-Scale Hoteling Intervention for People Experiencing Homelessness".

Exact roles for student interns depend on the student’s interests and skill set and will be determined in conjunction with Dr. Doran prior to the start of the internship. A minimum time commitment of 8 weeks over the summer and 20 hours/week is required. Many opportunities are computer-based (remote) and require independent work, though some tasks do require in-person work. Preference is given to applicants who will be in NYC all or part of the summer. Potential roles include assisting with literature reviews, assisting with qualitative interview transcript checking and coding, data entry, and preparing graphics, and drafting reports and articles. Students may also assist study Research Coordinators with research tasks such as taking meeting notes, recruitment activities, assisting with study regulatory document preparation and proofreading. All students must be self-directed, with good attention to detail.

Mentorship will occur during weekly team meetings and office hours with Dr. Doran. Students will have the opportunity to attend didactics offered by the Dept. of Emergency Medicine and the Dept. of Population Health, and to shadow Dr. Doran in the emergency department.

This is an unpaid internship. Students are encouraged to apply for funding or stipends from their home schools.
